Public Health Policy Pillars for the Sustainable Elimination of Zoonotic Schistosomiasis

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease acquired through contact with contaminated freshwater. The definitive hosts are terrestrial mammals, including humans, some Schistosoma species crossing the animal-human boundary zoonotic transmission. An estimated 12 million people live at risk of schistosomiasis caused by japonicum and mekongi , largely in World Health Organization’s Western Pacific Region Indonesia. Mathematical models have played vital role our understanding biology, transmission, impact intervention strategies, however, these mostly focused on non-zoonotic species. Whilst non-zoonotic-based capture aspects transmission dynamics, commonly-used frameworks yet to adequately complex epi-ecology multi-host However, overcoming knowledge gaps goes beyond dynamics modelling. To improve model utility enhance control programmes, we highlight three pillars that believe sustainable interventions implementation (community) policy-level, discuss context One-Health approach, recognising interconnection between animals their shared environment. These are: (1) human animal epi-ecological understanding; (2) economic considerations (such as treatment costs losses); (3) sociological understanding, inter- intra-human interactions. must be built strong foundation trust, support commitment stakeholders involved institutions.
